Artist
Joanne Gauthier was born in Trois-Rivières in 1962. University graduate in visual art, she has been interested by women’s concerns since 1984 and started painting them in oil washes, mixing painting and collage. Toward the end of the 80s, floral compositions appeared in her work and her technique suited this type of representation. As a rule, she applies an acrylic paste on the canvas before painting in color. Raw or blended, oil is diluted but never mixed with white.
Juxtaposition of colors, especially radiant reds and deep blues, remind us stained glass and illumination of the twelfth century. The flowers, vegetation and arabesques lend her work an early 20th century art nouveau flavor. Despite these resemblances to the past, subjects are resolutely contemporary and the artist’s work is deeply influenced by her woman’s life. Joanne Gauthier just adds a touch of fantasy to reality to open paths to a mysterious world.
Her very personal and innovative style has already caught the collecters’eyes and Joanne Gauthier has several projects for the USA and Europe.
