Artist
Born in Montreal in 1939, Lise Labbé has always been confronted by urban life, where dreams come and go quietly, and where imagination does not always flow easily. From the first moment, painting
became her opening to a life of creativity and hope.
Lise Labbé sees her painting as a personal learning element. She compares it to a child acquiring knowledge and experience through life itself. Through her journey we can feel Lise’s generosity toward her subjects and her understanding of the happier side of life and childhood. Lise has the ability to make us realize that we no longer have to be a child to feel the simplicity and beauty that a child feels. In her
paintings, we can find hope for ourselves.
Lise Labbé has the ability to bring us back to far away places. Her subjects invoke deeply anchored memories from times gone by, be it warm thoughts of kids playing in a playpen, in a back alley, or in a neighbourhood park. Maybe we see ourselves many years ago, or maybe we see our own children when we look at her paintings of young boys fervently chasing a ball with hockey sticks, or young ballerinas dressed in their doll-like tutu awaiting their next lesson. It has been said that children hold the future of the world in their hands. Lise Labbé seems to understand this, more than anyone else.
She easily takes us into her universe full of emotion. Her paintings invoke a carefree attitude, but the execution of her paintings is far from carefree. Like many good artists, Lise Labbé begins with precise sketch and drawing which she then transforms into a beautifully created canvases.
